How many American troops are in Europe — and why are they there?

U.S. Announces Withdrawal of 5,000 Troops from Germany

The United States Department of Defense has announced the withdrawal of 5,000 American troops from Germany, bringing the total number of personnel to levels observed prior to the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine. As of December 2022, there were 36,436 American military personnel stationed in Germany, making it the second-largest American military presence globally, following Japan.

Details regarding the future disposition of these troops remain unclear. The Pentagon has not yet specified whether the American troops will return to the United States or be reassigned to other locations. A significant component of this shift involves the relocation of a long-range firefighting battalion, scheduled for later this year.

This action will result in the cancellation of considerable rocket capabilities previously provided to Germany. This troop movement was initiated following the February 2022 deployment of an additional 7,000 American troops to Germany, shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The American military presence in Germany continues to be a subject of ongoing strategic evaluation.

There is currently no indication of a reversal of this decision.
