A recent report issued by the Public Health Institute (IShP) concerning the quality and safety of surface waters for recreational bathing has identified several significant sources of potential pollution along the shores of Lake Ohrid. The findings indicate that numerous hotels, residential complexes, and associated facilities situated near the lake continue to pose risks to the water quality. While the existing sewage collection and treatment system serves the municipalities of Ohrid and Struga, the report highlights critical gaps in infrastructure coverage.
Specifically, the study noted the presence of recently constructed buildings that are not connected to this established sewage network. The areas identified as having these connectivity issues are extensive. They include tourist complexes and hotels spanning the stretch from the “Desaret” Hotel towards St.
Naum. Furthermore, the report points to unserved facilities located between Struga and the village of Radozhdë. Beyond these commercial zones, private residences present concerns in several key areas.
These include communities in Saraishte, Kaneo, proximity to the “St. Sofia” church, and residential structures scattered along the entirety of the lake’s shoreline. The IShP’s assessment underscores that these unmanaged effluent sources directly impact the ecological balance and safety of the lake.
Addressing the connection of these disparate residential and commercial sites to the municipal wastewater treatment infrastructure is central to mitigating pollution risks and ensuring the sustained health of the lake environment for recreational use.
