It’s not just excess weight: Muscles also affect the risk of diabetes

A comprehensive study published in the journal Diabetes Care analyzed the long-term health outcomes of nearly 480 adults over a period spanning 14 years. Critically, all participants were free from a diagnosis of diabetes at the commencement of the research. Researchers from the Centre of Excellence for Population Health and Dementia at the Curtin Institute investigated the relationship between body composition and metabolic risk.

The findings specifically highlighted the condition known as sarcopenic obesity—characterized by a combination of high body fat levels and diminished muscle mass. The analysis revealed a significant correlation: individuals presenting with sarcopenic obesity were found to be more than 3.5 times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes when compared to participants who maintained a healthy body composition. Furthermore, the research provided detailed risk stratification.

Those diagnosed with sarcopenic obesity faced a 19 percent elevated risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to individuals who were classified as having only obesity. The risk was even more pronounced when compared to the healthiest cohort, showing a 91 percent increased likelihood of developing the condition. These results underscore the importance of assessing muscle health alongside general body fat measurements in preventative medicine.

The data suggests that sarcopenia, or age-related muscle loss, represents a substantial, measurable risk factor for future metabolic disease, warranting increased attention in public health guidelines.
