Just one finger away from victory – Sanchez’s goal against Portugal was canceled for an offside position that many do not see

Colombia narrowly missed securing a victory against Portugal during the group stage match. The potential winning goal, scored by defender Davinson Sanchez in added time, was ultimately disallowed following a review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system. The initial celebration among the Colombian players was cut short when the referee invalidated the goal due to an offside infraction, a decision subsequently upheld after VAR review.

Replays indicated that Sanchez was positioned very near the back line of the Portuguese defense. However, the semi-automated offside system determined that he was in an illegal offside position, even by a small margin. Despite the goal being disallowed, the match concluded with a 0-0 draw, allowing Colombia to secure first place in Group L with seven points.

The result marked a significant point accumulation for the Colombian team in their campaign against the Portuguese squad.
