Bulgarian MEP Andrej Kovačev, representing the European People’s Party group, addressed the political discourse surrounding North Macedonia following the plenary session of the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) in the European Parliament. The session concluded with the adoption of a report concerning the country’s progress, authored by rapporteur Thomas Waitz. Kovačev asserted that it is now necessary for Skopje to discontinue framing the relationship with Bulgaria as a point of contention or a justification for delay.
Instead, he urged Skopje to redirect the focus of accountability toward Bulgaria. The MEP expressed confidence in the Macedonian leadership’s understanding of their obligations. He stated that the appropriate course of action for Skopje is to commence the implementation of the negotiating framework that has already been approved by the country itself.
According to Kovačev, this framework forms the foundation of North Macedonia’s trajectory toward European integration. The implication is a call for concrete action from Skopje. Kovačev suggested that the focus must shift from perceived external obstacles to internal commitment.
He emphasized that adhering to the agreed-upon path is crucial for advancing the country’s European objectives, moving beyond any disputes that might be using the relationship with Bulgaria as a primary point of leverage.
