One of Epstein’s victims tells BBC: It was a cult from which there was no way out

One woman, who was part of Jeffrey Epstein’s circle for years, has provided a detailed account of the abuse she endured. Speaking to the BBC under the pseudonym Anya to protect her identity, she described Epstein’s system of manipulation as a “cult” from which escape was nearly impossible. Anya stated that she was only able to leave that life following Epstein’s death in 2019, a life she characterized by psychological control, sexual abuse, and total dependence on him.

Anya noted that the control was not overtly physical, stating, “The handcuffs were less visible, but they were there.” She claimed Epstein orchestrated his operation like a cult, with himself as the leader. She recounted living in apartments financed by him with about ten other young women, working for him constantly, and experiencing continuous sexual abuse. Initially, Epstein lured her with promises of a successful modeling career.

After moving to the fashion industry, she was introduced to Epstein due to his extensive connections. She now believes she was systematically targeted from the beginning, calling the entire process a “perfectly organized trap” designed to gain her trust. During this time, Epstein reportedly convinced her to improve her appearance, promised high-profile meetings, and requested photos, including nude images, while simultaneously eroding her self-confidence by suggesting she was inadequate.

Anya stated that the first sexual assault occurred while Epstein was incarcerated in Florida. Subsequently, other women in his circle reportedly minimized the severity of the events, causing her to doubt her own perceptions. Over time, she became completely reliant on Epstein, lacking her own bank account, the ability to rent housing, or autonomy over her contacts or healthcare.

Epstein reportedly maintained control through threats involving compromising materials, forcing thank-you letters, and sowing distrust among the women. Anya also mentioned a difficult incident where he persuaded her to surgically remove a tattoo by cutting the skin, resulting in visible scars. She concluded by stating that she spoke out to help other women recognize and exit abusive relationships, noting that “He created an entire ecosystem of abuse that served only him.”
