Over 40,000 cases remain unresolved at the Public Prosecution Office of Macedonia

During 2025, the basic public prosecutor’s offices throughout North Macedonia processed a substantial volume of criminal matters. According to the 2025 Work Report from the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Macedonia, a total of 77,089 criminal case files were managed across all categories, encompassing both newly filed indictments and those transferred from preceding years. The overall workload volume for the public prosecutor’s offices in macedonia remained relatively stable when compared to the figures recorded in 2024.

Analysis of the data indicated minor fluctuations in defendant demographics; specifically, there was a slight decrease in the number of adult defendants, alongside a more pronounced reduction noted within the juvenile defendant caseload. Focusing on new filings, the data revealed that 25,615 new indictments were received during 2025. This initial influx of cases was categorized by defendant status: 19,976 indictments involved adults, 1,124 concerned children, and 4,515 cases were registered against unknown defendants.

These new cases represent only a portion of the total 77,089 cases processed. The final count includes the accumulated unresolved cases that were transferred from previous reporting periods, providing a comprehensive view of the judicial backlog managed by the public authorities.
