Pristina’s Mayor, Përparim Rama, has issued a warning regarding a planned protest scheduled for September 1. Rama announced that the mayors representing Kosovo’s municipalities will assemble for the demonstration at 11:00 AM on the “Skënderbeu” Square in Pristina. The protest is organized in response to what Rama characterizes as the obstruction of municipalities and citizens by the central government.
In a statement, Rama asserted that the citizenry should not be disconnected from local governance simply because they did not vote for decentralization. He specifically called upon the citizens of Pristina to participate, emphasizing that tax revenues should be reinvested into local infrastructure and services. “The money you pay as tax should be returned to you in schools, kindergartens, roads, health facilities, and investments,” Rama stated.
The rama highlighted the importance of local fiscal autonomy, arguing that tax funds must benefit the communities that generate them. During the announcement, Rama referenced municipal fund figures, claiming that the current administration has allocated specific amounts since 2022. The planned protest aims to draw attention to the perceived mismanagement or withholding of funds meant for local development across Kosovo’s municipalities.
