Recent clashes, VV seeks three names, LDK urges to declare on Vjosa Osmani

Kosovo Faces Presidential Uncertainty as Deadline Approaches

Kosovo is facing a critical juncture following a recent period of political instability and subsequent parliamentary proceedings. The situation has seen clashes within the Assembly as Vetëvendosje (Self-Determination) seeks to identify three names for consideration as presidential candidates. The constitutional deadline for electing a President concludes on April 28th, with the potential for extraordinary parliamentary elections if the Assembly fails to reach a decision.

This situation stems from Vetëvendosje’s inability to secure a quorum during the initial rounds of voting on April 4th. The party lacked the required 80 deputies present for the first and second rounds, necessitating a final round requiring a simple majority. Following this unsuccessful attempt, Vjosa Osmani issued a decree appointing her to the role of President.

However, Vetëvendosje subsequently requested the Constitutional Court to grant them a 34-day period to address the situation. The court’s ruling has intensified the pressure on the Assembly to act decisively before the April 28th deadline. The outcome of this process will determine whether Kosovo proceeds to extraordinary elections.
