EU Ambassador Michalis Rokas addressed the ongoing discussions surrounding proposed changes to the Electoral Code, noting that achieving consensus among the involved parties is crucial for the reform package. Rokas indicated that while the core legislation is considered sound, disagreements persist regarding the practical implementation, or “modalities,” of the changes. Speaking during an event promoting new military equipment, Rokas stated that the law itself is fundamentally good.
He referenced positive assessments from organizations such as the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) and the Venice Commission, suggesting that the focus now lies on resolving procedural differences. “I understand that there is disagreement when it comes to these modalities, but I feel there is a good will to overcome them,” Rokas commented. He expressed optimism that the Parliamentary Commission for Elections is making progress.
Rokas urged the various parties to engage in dialogue to reach a consensus on this significant matter. He concluded by reiterating his belief that “the foundations of the law and the law itself are truly good.” The emphasis, therefore, remains on procedural agreement to finalize the reform concerning the Electoral Code.
