The new school year begins today in North Macedonia, with 238,000 students returning to classrooms.

The academic session for the 2026-2027 school year commences today, enrolling a total of 238,000 students. This total is comprised of 174,000 students in primary schools and 64,000 students in middle schools. Following the summer recess, classes are scheduled to continue until April 10, with the exception of graduating students, whose final day of instruction is May 17.

The winter break separating the two semesters is slated from October 31 to January 21. Official enrollment figures for the first grade and the first year of middle school will be confirmed shortly. To date, the Ministry of Education has processed registration data for 14,952 students entering the first grade and 16,932 students entering the first year of middle school.

In preparation for the academic year, textbooks are being distributed to various schools in batches, following requests submitted to the Ministry of Education. Furthermore, efforts are underway to optimize the overall school network, which includes plans for the closure of certain educational facilities. These measures aim to manage the logistics for the incoming cohort of students throughout the coming school year.
