Volkswagen Design Chief: Cars need to look friendlier, not aggressive

Volkswagen Group’s head of design, Andreas Mindt, has voiced criticism regarding the current aesthetic direction of modern cars. Speaking to Autoweek, Mindt characterized the industry’s trend toward an aggressive appearance—often featuring oversized grilles, extremely slim headlights, and front designs intended to intimidate—as “unintelligent.”

Mindt noted that some manufacturers appear to employ this design strategy with the goal of influencing other drivers. He suggested that an overtly menacing look might prompt other motorists to adjust their driving behavior upon spotting the vehicle in their rearview mirrors.

However, he indicated that Volkswagen does not intend to adopt this philosophy. Instead, Mindt advocated for a different approach to the visual design of cars. He questioned the necessity of adopting an intimidating look, stating, “Why not give cars a friendly look?

I want to live in a friendly world. I do not want to live in a menacing world.” This statement suggests a strategic pivot away from highly aggressive styling cues toward designs that project approachability. The sentiment reflects a desire to reshape the public perception of cars, moving beyond purely intimidating aesthetics to incorporate a softer, more welcoming look.
