Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced that Serbia is assembling a group of construction experts and engineers to assess potential alterations to the flow of the Ibar River. Speaking to state television in Serbia, the President stated, “When they are already provoking so many of our people, let’s see; we have different reasons for changing the flow of the Ibar River, so we will see what the Albanians will do and how they will behave.
We are a sovereign country, you know, sometimes we have such interests, sometimes we have such interests, and we will act accordingly.”
The statement indicates that Serbia intends to evaluate the technical feasibility of modifying the river’s course. This development follows discussions concerning the management and natural resources within the region. The Ministry of Environment, Spatial Planning, and Infrastructure had previously conducted exercises related to these matters.
Vučić’s remarks suggest that the potential modification of the Ibar River’s flow is viewed by the Serbian government as a strategic measure, possibly in response to ongoing tensions.
