A black raccoon was involved in an unusual incident at the Exchange commercial center located on the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER) military installation, near Anchorage, Alaska. The animal quietly entered the commercial center, surprising both shoppers and staff members present at the location. Witnesses reported that the raccoon did not exhibit any aggressive behavior during its time inside the facility.
Instead, its actions suggested it was foraging for food. During its brief visit, the animal was observed taking a pastry from one of the store displays. Following this, the raccoon left behind waste material in the commercial center’s restroom facility.
After these activities, the raccoon exited the building and returned to the surrounding natural environment without causing any structural damage or posing a threat to personnel. Local authorities noted that encounters between wildlife, such as raccoons, and people are not uncommon in the Alaskan region, where animal interactions are frequent. The incident serves as another reminder of the proximity between human activity and local fauna at the base.
