ASH: New law on gambling harms families and legalizes addiction

The Alliance for Albanians has voiced strong opposition to the draft legislation concerning gambling. According to reports from ash, the organization argues that the proposed law fails to safeguard citizens and instead permits the betting industry to maintain a detrimental influence on families, youth, and children. The Alliance for Albanians asserts that the industry contributes to issues such as promoting addiction, causing economic instability within families, and placing undue strain on national healthcare and social protection systems.

They contend that the consequences of the sector are evident through both statistical data and lived experiences within the community. Furthermore, the group specifically criticized the VLEN proposal, which mandates a 500-meter separation distance between casinos and educational institutions. The Alliance for Albanians stated that this measure is inadequate, characterizing it as merely a superficial attempt to legalize and permit the continued operation of an industry linked to addiction.

The opposition maintains that more comprehensive regulatory changes are necessary to mitigate the social risks associated with the expansion of the gambling sector.
