How are big tech companies changing journalism?

The influence of major digital platforms on global news creation, distribution, and public perception was a central theme at Deutsche Welle’s Global Media Forum in Bonn. Participants noted that major tech platforms, including Google, Meta, Amazon, Apple, and Microsoft, have fundamentally transformed journalism over the last two decades by controlling not only news dissemination but also its visibility and revenue streams. A primary discussion point was the challenge to media independence posed by these powerful big companies.

Journalists and newsrooms frequently report needing to adjust their content to align with the algorithms of these platforms to maintain audience reach. Courtney C. Radsch, director of the Center for Media and Digital Governance, highlighted the growing tension between media outlets and the platforms.

She raised concerns regarding the extensive use of journalistic content for artificial intelligence training, often occurring without compensation to the original creators, which she warned could diminish factual connection. Furthermore, she cautioned that the concentration of economic and political power within these few entities poses significant risks to democratic structures. Conversely, some experts emphasized the necessity for media organizations to adapt to the current digital landscape by developing sustainable business models, such as increased reliance on subscriptions and technology.

However, participants acknowledged that paid models are not universally viable, particularly in regions with limited economic means. Despite these challenges, many stressed that journalism must remain accessible on major digital platforms where the public consumes news. The forum also addressed the critical dangers of disinformation, polarization, and the need for media to confront these issues while preserving their role in democratic societies.
