The Municipality of Podujeva has officially declared a state of emergency following a severe deterioration in the collection and disposal of municipal waste across both the city center and surrounding villages. This directive was issued by the Emergency Headquarters for Defense and Rescue and is set to remain in effect from August 5 through November 5, 2026. Mayor of Podujeva, Shpejtim Bulliqi, who also heads the Emergency Headquarters, confirmed that the waste management situation has worsened considerably over recent months.
Bulliqi stated that managing refuse in the municipality’s areas has presented ongoing difficulties. The underlying issues relate to the service provision structure. Previously, the Regional Waste Company, “Pastrimi,” had formally requested to be relieved of its responsibilities within the villages, citing an inability to maintain service levels.
This operational duty was subsequently transferred to the private entity, “Natyra.” However, Mayor Bulliqi indicated that despite these transitions, significant and persistent problems related to waste handling remain unresolved, necessitating the declaration of this formal emergency status for Podujeva. The declaration underscores the critical nature of the waste infrastructure failure, demanding immediate intervention across all levels of municipal service. The establishment of the emergency period aims to mobilize resources and coordinate efforts to stabilize the waste disposal system within the municipality.
