Pristina’s Mayor, Përparim Rama, has accused the Vetëvendosje Movement and the Kosovo Government of obstructing the “Urban Island” project. Rama stated that this initiative is intended to connect approximately 30,000 residents of the Arbëria area with the central city district. His public reaction follows the recent suspension of work on the development.
Furthermore, a conference was scheduled for Mayor Rama on May 21, 2026, at the “Urban Island” site, but this event was reportedly halted by the Institute of Cultural Heritage. In a Facebook post, Rama directed questions to the Vetëvendosje Movement, demanding they provide explanations to the public regarding the decision to cease construction activities. He questioned the basis for the stoppage, asking, “Vetëvendosje, tell the citizens who ordered you to block Pristina?”
According to Rama, the blockage of the “Urban Island” project represents another instance of intervention, similar to the previously cited issue concerning the “George Bush” square.
He asserted that the impediment to the “Urban Island” development, which aims to enhance connectivity for a significant portion of Pristina’s population, is unwarranted. The Mayor’s statements underscore ongoing tensions regarding the implementation and scope of major urban development plans within the city.
